I am a Research Associate in social ecology in the Laurence Mee Centre for Society and the Sea at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS). My research explores the kinds of relationship that people in coastal communities have with their marine environment, and the ways in which they perceive and express those relationships. I practised as a solicitor for several years before moving into the world of marine policy via a Masters degree in Coastal and Ocean Policy at Plymouth University. My main research focus has been on identifying and exploring the issues underlying conservation conflicts in coastal communities with a focus on social history and cultural influences that shape relations between humans and nature; the coupled social-ecological aspects of marine policy; and art-science collaborations.
