ISSMER Online Seminar 3: Planning – 14 January

This is the last of three online seminars we are hosting (1.5 hours each), to be held on Wednesday 14 January. Each event is based on one of our core themes, developed at the last workshop in Stromness, Orkney. The aim is to get a quick update on current ISSMER member activities with the hope of bringing as many of us together to discuss our latest work and ideas.

We invite you to join us online, but please note that places are limited.

Theme: Planning
How to re-think the policy and planning of marine energy, both on land and in the sea?

Time and date
14 January
16.00 – 17.30 GMT / 11.00 – 12:30 EST / 8.00 – 9.30 PST

Speakers

  • Dr Kate Johnson (Assistant Professor, Heriot-Watt University):

The Politics of Planning at Sea – diverse drivers and perverse campaigns

  • Shelley Macdougall (Professor, Acadia University):

The Value of Delay and Implications for Government Policy in Marine Renewable Energy Development: When uncertainty is high, it is sometimes better to delay a project until more is known. The option to delay has value for a company and can be estimated using the Black-Scholes option pricing model. If the value of delay is greater than the value of investing now, it makes economic sense to wait. This study can guide policy makers in the design of support mechanisms that encourage development.

  • Dr Tavis Potts (Senior Lecturer, Aberdeen University):

Is the Blue Economy ‘fit for purpose’ in terms of delivering a low carbon society? This is a part theoretical, part practical and hopefully controversial discussion over the definition, role, effectiveness and ramifications of the practice of the ‘blue economy’ in terms of steering society to a low carbon focus. Climate change is one of the key challenges of our time, and with the IPCC forecasting significant changes to coastal and marine systems the role of the blue economy is critical in driving mitigation and adaptation processes. We ask the question…. Is the concept doing enough for the transition?

The seminar will have 3 short presentations (15 mins each) around a theme, followed by 45 minutes plenary discussion with all participants.
